Clothes hanging outside a house

Keep your clothes looking hot – Wash them at 30ºC

Did you know that running your washing machine at 30 degrees instead of 40 can save 40% of the energy demand? That’s great for your bill and the planet. Modern washing powders work effectively at this temperature and as lower temperatures are kinder to fabric, your clothes will look good for longer too.

Objective/ Goal

  • Wash clothes at 30 degrees: the average washing temperature in the UK is 39 degrees. If that average reduced by only 3 degrees, the carbon savings would be equivalent to taking 127,000 cars off the road. Or, if you prefer, save you enough energy to make an extra 2,500 cups of tea per year.
  • Follow other energy-saving washing tips: operate full loads, air dry clothes rather than using a tumble dryer. If you do use a tumble dryer, use the washing machine spin cycle first to drain excess water and help your clothes to dry faster.

How/ Instructions

Set your washing machine to 30 degrees.
